Zephyra was second-guessing herself as she faced off hand-to-hand against two of Qorvaq’s men. All three of them had lost their weapons during the melee, which was good for Zephyra, but the bounty hunters were proving to be highly trained fighters. If they actually understood how to team up against her, they would almost certainly win. It was yet another downfall of the dog-eat-dog attitude among the people of the Free Federation: everyone was always looking out only for themselves.

It was a shortcoming that Zephyra was more than happy to exploit. She positioned herself between the two while they took turns attacking her, allowing her to more easily defend herself. Unfortunately, that was all she could do. Neither gave her the opportunity to launch a counterattack without leaving herself vulnerable to the other one.

“Stelmar!” she shouted, blocking a roundhouse kick with her forearm. “Status!”

Her answer came in the form of a zarking stun blast, followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor. She couldn’t see him, but she could tell it was Stelmar who had been on the receiving end. She felt a surge of adrenaline at the realization that her strongest—and nearest—ally was down. Just as quickly, she understood that she had just been given an opportunity.

Zephyra bent forward at the waist and thrust her right foot backward in a horse kick. It landed solidly in the abdomen, sending him sprawling backward into the wall. She knew he would recover quickly, which meant she had precious little time for the second part of her plan. She leapt to the right of the man facing her and, sure enough, there was the hunter who had dropped Stelmar with a stun blast. As soon as he caught sight of her, he trained his blaster in her direction and tensed to fire.

Zephyra spun to her right with the speed of a mongoose and snagged her opponent by the collar, yanking him to her left. She savored the look of surprise on his face as she let him go and he took the blast meant for her square in the middle of his back. She side-stepped him as he fell forward, giving her a full view of the gunman. While he was still processing what he’d done, she was dive-rolling toward him. The roll ended with her on her rear end on the floor. The hunter realized a second too late what was happening; he managed to train the muzzle downward, but not before Zephyra sent a pile-driver kick right between his legs.

The gunman let out a gurgle, but Zephyra had no time to admire her handiwork. She rolled onto her side in an attempt to get to her feet before her third opponent could recover, but she was too late; he had launched himself off the wall she’d kicked him into and drove right into her while she was still trying to stand. The hunter’s knee caught her full-force in the chin as they collided, sending her right back onto her ass.
